Focus on what you want and not on what scares you. If I had known to replace the thoughts of ridicule by my classmates with thoughts of how fun it would be to dance and laugh or how good I could feel about being there for a friend who was counting on me, I may have been able to calm my seventh-grade nausea. When I’m doing something that tests me, like jumping out of a plane at 12,000 feet, I focus on the details of my training, the equipment I am wearing, and the beauty of the landscape I am fortunate to witness as I plummet to the earth. The mind processes one thought at a time, so you just have to keep it focused on a positive outcome rather than the possibility of a negative one.

Act anyway. If you are unable to block the fears from your thoughts and are still experiencing a lot of distress, do what scares you anyway. You will never know the outcome if you don’t. Most times, fear is a false outcome projection and is not the actual conclusion. For example, I’m sure nearly every new skydiver feels fear when the small aircraft door opens, they feel the rush of cold air on their faces, and hear the yells of their instructors indicating it is time to exit the plane.

However, in 2009, the U.S. Parachute Association recorded only 16 skydiving fatalities out of nearly 3,000,000 jumps made which included 400,000 first-time jumpers. That same year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported just under 31,000 deaths by motor vehicle accidents. Most people have a greater fear of jumping from an airplane than driving a car even if it’s not statistically reasonable.

FEAR = False Expectations Appearing Real

If you can’t stop the fear by focusing on a different outcome, act anyway. There is a good chance your fear will not be realized and you’ll experience the exhilaration of achievement. Regardless of the outcome, you’ll feel good for managing fear and displaying courage. The more you work the courage muscle, the stronger it becomes, thus making it less likely fear will discourage you in the future.

If you don’t try at all, you don’t gain anything. If you do try and fail, you’re probably not worse off. In fact, at least you learned something new—what you tried that time doesn’t work. In that case, on to the next try. If you try and succeed, you’ve improved your situation. Keep in mind, if you let fear stop you from taking action, you could end up with regrets. You’ll never know how things would have turned out if you had taken action.

Fears generally come from within us, not from other people. Negativity can come from either source. If you’ve ever told someone about your goal and had them respond in a negative way—laughing at you, questioning your abilities, or labeling your goal as stupid—then you have experienced a type of negativity from others we’ll discuss next. If you’ve had those thoughts yourself, you are experiencing negativity from within.
